Apparition Lit Recommends! 2018 Good Things by Clarke

PART THREE of our four-part blog series focussing on the good things and gift ideas from 2018.

Over the final four Mondays in 2018, the Apparition Lit editors will take turns sharing our favorite things we discovered this year, including everything from books to video games to Youtube channels. You can click on the names here and check out the first two blogs in the series, the first from our Northern-most editor, Rebecca Bennett, and the second by our Managing Editor, Tacoma Tomilson. Today’s offering is from the inimitable Clarke Doty.

Of course, we’d be remiss without saying that Apparition Lit is always open for new subscribers or donations to help keep our stories online.

I have not read 64 books this year. (But challenge accepted, Taco. See you in 2019.)

Right now, I’m reading Liesl & Po by Lauren Oliver and loving it so far. The book is middle grade and full of charming characters, rich imagery, and magic.

I recently read The Girl from the Other Side: Siúil a Rún Volumes 1 and 2 by Nagabe. I don’t read a lot of manga, so I’m no expert, but I found these books hauntingly beautiful.

My new favorite podcast is Unlikeable Female Characters brought to you by authors Kristen Lepionka, Layne Fargo, and Wendy Heard. I spent both episodes (there are only 2 so far) laughing often at the hosts’ banter and nodding furiously in agreement with their critiques and commentary. And episode 2’s guest Hannah Mary McKinnon was a delight.

If you seek self-care in video games, I cannot recommend Ori and the Blind Forest highly enough. I am not a skilled gamer by anyone’s estimation (except maybe my 10-year-old’s), but I get blissfully lost in this gorgeous world and its story. (And I cry at the intro no matter how many times I watch it.)
